Where to start
The way we grasp writing utensils is important! A proper pencil grasp ensures a pain-free, legible writing experience. Tripod grasp is the way to go! This type of grasp is optimal for writing speed, good penmanship, and comfort.
![]() Tripod grasp begins emerging at age 3, and is fine-tuned up to the age of 6. It begins in “static” position, in which the fingers remain stationary and movement comes from the wrist. It then matures to “dynamic”, and the fingers move with more precise movements with less wrist involvement.
If your child has difficulty maintaining a tripod grasp, try a smaller writing utensil. A quick fix is to break crayons into smaller pieces, which naturally guide the fingers into forming a tripod grasp. We can help
